From Andermatt to Airolo via the Gotthard pass on the legendary horse-drawn mail coach. 170 years ago, crossing the Gotthard pass was an exhausting trial for the merchants, scientists, messengers and world travellers who embarked on the journey. Nowadays the same trip is a unique and exclusive pleasure, an unforgettable experience and a memory that you will treasure.
Just sit back in our luxuriously fitted coupé landau, take in the breathtaking scenery of the Gotthard pass and savour the day and the romance of travel as it used to be.
Your journey starts at Andermatt train station, where you climb aboard our Gotthard post coach, which is a faithful replica of the original. Leave your worries behind, and let us look after you…all you have to do is relax as the coachman and conductor (both wearing original uniforms) proudly drive their five-horse team through the Urseren Valley. Our first stop will be at the Hotel Drei Könige und Post in the centre of Andermatt, at the very same place where the old mail coaches used to pull up as they journeyed south. Enjoy a welcome drink here, and then we carry on past Hospental and up towards Mätteli, our second stop. Whenever possible we will leave the new road and follow the old Gotthard route, e.g. at Brüggloch, where we trot over the border into canton Ticino. You will be served a relaxed lunch at the travellers’ hospice, once an old ‘Sust’, or goods storage building, at the summit of the pass, close by the site of the old Monte Prosa hotel. After lunch there will be time for a visit to the National Gotthard Museum. In the afternoon, the Tremola awaits us – that well known winding stretch of the pass that Rudolf Koller painted to such dramatic effect. We carry on downwards, past Motto Bartola, and on to Airolo, where our trip will end with a ”merenda” – 4 o’clock tea as served in Ticino. Grooms to look after the horses will follow you discreetly in a small van. As our guest, the only thing you have to do is relax…

Return trip from Airolo: From Airolo, take the TILO (Ticino-Lombardy Express) back north at 20 minutes before every full hour. If you are returning to Andermatt, you will board the waiting train of the Schöllenen Railway in Göschenen and reach Andermatt at 6 minutes past the hour; a journey of 26 minutes. Otherwise, you will continue to Erstfeld from where you can change to the Intercity’s of the SBB. If you are disabled, please call us; we will help you to organize a return trip by car.

Journey to Andermatt and return journey from Airolo. If you travel with your car to Andermatt, you are with the railway in 25 minutes from Airolo to Andermatt (see railway connections). During the reservation of 8 places (whole mail-coach) receive to 10% discount. Children nutil 12 years receive a reduction from CHF 150.-.
